Established by the people of Sheboygan in consideration of their children's future in the days of the Civil War.
In the middle of the 19th century, Germans who had come to the United States in search of a new start moved further and further west until they arrived in Sheboygan in 1847. At this early time settlers suffered from hunger and bad weather, lacking both food and clothing.
Soon the political environment becam strained an the Civil War began. Lakeland College was established in 1862 in the midst of such circumstances. It began as a seminary using church facilities and was called Missionshaus (Mission House).
It was born from the desire of the people of Sheboygan to provide a place for the next generation to receive higher education.
The doors to the college were opened to women early, and it accepted students from a wide variety of disciplines.
In 1888 the school's landmark, the Old Main Hall, was completed. It was first called the "Old Main House," and it welcomed many students right from the beginning. At the time, it was uncommon for educational institutions to accept women, but Lakeland College opened its doors to female students in 1898. Not only aspiring preachers, but students wishing to study a variety of liberal arts fields began enrolling.
The name was changed from Mission House to Lakeland College in 1956. On that occasion it was established as a genuine liberal arts university.
