At the Lakeland College Japan Campus, the students take courses in English for Academic Purposes and the Academic Program. Upon completing the coursework, students will receive an Associate's Degree (junior college diploma). Afterwards, students may go on to the main Lakeland College or another private or state university in the U.S. and start their Junior year in a 4-year Bachelor's Degree Program.

After finishing the Academic Program and completing the curriculum at the Japan Campus, students will receive an Associate of Arts Degree. After graduating from the Japan Campus, units earned in Japan will be transfered to the main campus or another state or private university in the U.S. where the student will begin his or her Junior year.

The term and credit system employed is not like that in Japanese high schools and universities where the curriculum is divided into years. Instead, it is based on terms, and the credits are completed after coursework is finished. Even if there are courses that could not be completed, there is no need to stay back a year, because the course can be taken by itself in the next term. At the Japan Campus, both English for Academic Purposes and the Academic Program are divided into 3 terms per year.

If English for Academic Purposes is completed in the first three terms and the Academic Program in the next two terms (20 courses=61 units), the student can graduate from the Japan Campus in 2 to 2.5 years. When a student goes on to the main Lakeland College campus to do his or her bachelor's degree studies, the 12 units from English for Academic Purposes will be added, and the number of remaining units will be 47. This works out to about 1.5 to 2 years until graduation. Even if the student transfers to another university for his or her bachelor's degree studies, he or she will start there as a Junior and can graduate in about 2 years.
