Encyclopedias It is useful to begin your research by consulting an encyclopedia for a basic overview of an artist, art movement, or a given country's art. General Encyclopedias such as Encyclopedia Britannica and Wikipedia offer a vast range of articles on historical topics. Such articles are usually not allowed as principle sources for a research paper but can help your understanding and refer you to other more in-depth sources and related topics. The 34-volume Dictionary of Art (R 703 D554) is a good place to begin research on any historical or contemporary artist or art topic.
Special Encyclopedias both paper and online, are available for most topics, ranging from broad coverage to specialized. The Dictionary of Art (R 703 D554) covers most topics.
